Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder (Vaginismus)
Vaginismus has been proposed to be defined as the inability of a woman, although she desires it, to allow the penetration of the vagina by a penis, finger and/or another object in a persistent or recurrent manner. In these women, there are often phobic avoidance, involuntary pelvic muscle contractions, and expectation/fear/experience of pain. It is not related to structural disorders or other physical abnormalities.
Vaginismus may have psychological causes. Among the psychological causes, there may be incorrect beliefs about sexuality, fears, traumatic sexual experiences, or rigid cultural/taboo-based approaches. In its treatment, sexual therapy, exercises aimed at relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, and cognitive behavioral therapies are generally used.
Vaginismus can make both sexual intercourse and gynecological examinations difficult. It can be treated with a specialist sexual therapist/counselor.
